This story of a 78 year old male patient is compelling, to say the least.
During a recent medical-dental mission trip, a 78-year-old male presented to the clinic seeking urgent dental and medical care. Upon evaluation, his blood pressure was critically elevated at 245/115 mmHg, and his blood glucose level was over 400 mg/dL. Due to these life-threatening values, he was not cleared for a planned tooth extraction and was at immediate risk for hypertensive crisis and diabetic complications. Unfortunately, the patient had no means of accessing a hospital or obtaining medications. Recognizing the severity of his condition, our medical team collaborated to stabilize him using the limited resources available on-site. Thanks to the donated medications from Americares, we were able to administer antihypertensive therapy, metformin, and antibiotics, which led to a rapid improvement in his clinical status. After his vital signs were brought to a safer range, the patient successfully underwent a tooth extraction. He was sent home with a supply of blood pressure medication, metformin, and antibiotics, along with thorough instructions for follow-up at the local health department clinic within 5–7 days. Education was also provided to both the patient and his family regarding chronic disease management. The availability of these donated medications made a critical difference in this patient's outcome. Without them, he would not have been able to receive the dental procedure, nor would he have had access to the essential treatments for his dangerously uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes.
